From Raw Steel to Precision Component

A rolling bearing looks simple, but its production is one of the most disciplined processes in mechanical engineering. A typical deep-groove or roller bearing passes through roughly nine controlled stages, and the reliability of the finished part depends on holding micrometre-level accuracy at every one of them.

1. Material Selection and Forming

The starting point is the raw material. Rings are most often made from high-carbon chromium bearing steel (widely specified as GCr15 / 100Cr6 / AISI 52100 / SUJ2), with stainless or ceramic grades chosen for corrosive or high-temperature duty. Steel bar is cut into blanks and forged into rough inner and outer rings. Forging is not just shaping - it refines the grain flow of the metal, improving strength and impact resistance compared with machined-from-bar stock.

2. Annealing and Turning

Forged rings are annealed (heated to roughly 650-700°C and slowly cooled) to soften the metal and relieve internal stress, which makes the following machining easier and more accurate. Turning on CNC lathes then cuts the outer diameter, bore, faces and the raceway groove to a near-final shape, leaving only a small allowance for grinding.

3. Heat Treatment

Heat treatment converts the soft machined ring into a hard, fatigue-resistant component. The ring is austenitised, quenched (rapidly cooled in oil or gas) to form martensite, then tempered at low temperature to trade a little hardness for toughness. Through-hardened rings typically reach 58-64 HRC. Some designs use case carburising to keep a tough core under a very hard surface.

4. Grinding and Superfinishing

This is where precision is born. Grinding brings diameters and raceway geometry to tolerances of a few micrometres, with raceway surface roughness commonly held around Ra ≤ 0.2 µm. Superfinishing (a stone or tape polishing pass) then refines the raceway to Ra ≤ 0.05 µm, producing a cross-hatched surface that holds lubricant, lowers friction and noise, and extends fatigue life.

5. Rolling Elements, Cages and Assembly

Balls are cold-headed from wire, heat treated, then ground and lapped to roundness within fractions of a micrometre (grades such as G10 down to G5). Rollers follow a similar path. Finally the inner ring, outer ring, rolling elements and cage (retainer) are assembled in a clean environment, lubricated, sealed where required, and inspected for dimensional accuracy, vibration (Z1-Z4) and noise before release.
